About Continuing Professional Development

1 Overall Objective
As corporate governance is crucial to the development of companies and the economy at large and as directors are ultimately responsible for corporate governance, The Hong Kong Institute of Directors (HKIoD) encourages all directors to remain up-to-date with director practices and advocates the pursuit of continual professional development by directors.
2 What Is Continuing Professional Development (“CPD”)?
CPD refers to the acts and processes with which one acquires state-of-the-art knowledge and skills beneficial to continuing practice. Such processes include structured programmes and unstructured tasks. Activities of structured programmes may be in the format of formal participation in a training course or an event or a project or an assignment, whereas activities of unstructured tasks cover self-directed studies.
3 Programme Offers Of HKIoD

Target audiences for HKIoD’s programme offers include:-

  • Established, newly appointed and potential directors as well as those interested in pursuing the programmes.
  • Both members and non-members, in the interest of promoting professionalism among directors society-wide. Majority of the programmes are open to members and non-members, whereas some programmes are for members exclusively to participate in.

Depending on target groups, HKIoD’s CPD programmes are designed with different levels of depth to suit the following purposes:-

  • generating awareness of the role and responsibilities of directors and the need for training;
  • enhancing the professional competence of directors;
  • updating knowledge on trends and best director practices;
  • promoting the discussion and exchange of views on the latest news and public policies which impact corporate governance.

To facilitate directors in acquiring knowledge and skills, HKIoD offers structured programmes in formal courses, seminars, conferences, forums, and meetings as follows:-

For members and non-members

  • Training courses in seminar settings, in modules of 1-3 hours each.
  • Speaker meetings at luncheon and dinner, typically sessions of 1-2 hours each.
  • Professional talks, typically 1-hour sessions.
  • Published standards, guidelines, and position papers.
  • Outreach talks to forums for the public.
  • Outreach talks to specific groups.

For members only

  • Workshops on developing guidelines.
  • Workshops to focus on issues and develop positions.
  • Workshops for experience sharing.
  • Opportunities for delivery of a talk on a relevant subject.
  • Opportunities for authoring a paper on a relevant subject.
  • Opportunities for organizing and designing a forum or an event or a project.
The Core Competencies for Directors as defined by HKIoD forms the basis for the development of these programmes.

Core Competencies For Directors

Background

Aims of setting up Core Competencies are as follows:-

  • To identify skills, knowledge and qualities required of drectors, reflecting on today’s demands.
  • To form a basis for developing:-
    1. Continuing Professional Development Pogrammes for directors.
    2. Further updates in light of changing demands.
    3. Standards for accreditation of members, attaining professional certification and a Registered Professional Director status in future.

The Continuing Professional Development (“CPD”) programmes organised by HKIoD for directors include seminars leading to a HKIoD Diploma, speaker meetings, professional talks, themed workshops, special review groups, conferences and forums, position papers on corporate governance issues, publications of guidelines and standards on best practices, etc

Five groups of skills, knowledge and qualities have been identified as being necessary for anyone serving or aspiring to serve as an effective Director., viz

Group 2: Power, Responsibility and Liability of the Board and the Individual Director.

Group 4: Individual Attributes and Qualities.
