Climate Governance

The Hong Kong Institute of Directors (HKIoD) is proud to host the Climate Governance Initiative Hong Kong Chapter (CGI HK) (https://www.climate-cgi.hk) , the local chapter of the global Climate Governance Initiative.
As the leading body promoting excellence in directorship in Hong Kong, HKIoD recognises climate governance as a critical dimension of modern corporate governance. Hosting CGI HK allows HKIoD to connect its mission with a global movement, empowering directors in Hong Kong to address the defining challenge of our time.
Why Climate Governance Matters to Directors
Climate change is no longer an abstract environmental issue—it directly shapes business risk, strategy, and shareholder value.
- Global risks and business impacts: Between 2011 and 2020, extreme weather events caused US$2.5 trillion in financial losses. Supply chains face disruption, assets risk becoming stranded, and the cost of capital is increasingly tied to climate readiness.
- Regulatory and fiduciary duties: Directors are now expected to oversee greenhouse gas reduction targets, climate-related disclosures, and strategic resilience.
- Stewardship responsibilities: Boards must anticipate and act on risks, while capturing opportunities from the transition to a net-zero economy.
Good governance has always meant aligning accountability, performance, and integrity. Today, climate competence is inseparable from these responsibilities. Directors are stewards of long-term value creation – climate governance is therefore integral to their fiduciary duty.
About the Global Climate Governance Initiative (CGI)
The Climate Governance Initiative (CGI) was established in 2019 with the purpose of mobilising and equipping board directors worldwide to take climate action and future-proof their companies. Globally, the Climate Governance Initiative works in collaboration with the World Economic Forum.
CGI promotes eight core principles of effective climate governance, covering:
- climate accountability on boards,
- command of the subject,
- board structure,
- material risk and opportunity assessment,
- strategic integration,
- incentivisation,
- reporting and disclosure, and
- exchange of knowledge and experience.
With over 34 chapters spanning more than 73 countries, CGI provides a global community for directors to exchange insights and elevate boardroom practice.
About Climate Governance Initiative Hong Kong Chapter (CGI HK)
CGI HK brings this international movement to Hong Kong’s boardrooms. Its mission is to advance knowledge, motivate action, and propagate board practice in climate governance.
Through forums, training, and publications, CGI HK empowers directors to:
- build climate awareness and skills,
- embed climate considerations into board decision-making, and
- act on the risks and opportunities posed by the climate emergency.
HKIoD is grateful to host CGI HK and to provide a trusted platform for directors across sectors to engage on climate governance. With Hong Kong’s unique position as a global financial hub, CGI HK and HKIoD together aim to raise the standards of board leadership for a sustainable future.
